Die Konstruktion der stillen Welt

Die Serie befasst sich mit der Entwicklung und klimatischen Veränderung des arktischen Landschaftsraums am Beispiel des Inselarchipels Spitzbergen. Die Serie umfasst Aspekte der Siedlungsgeschichte, des Bergbaus und der Forschung auf dem Archipel. Die Konstruktion der stillen Welt geht dabei auch auf die unterschiedlichen Vorstellungen ein, die mit der arktischen Landschaft kulturgeschichtlich verbunden sind. Das Unbehagen, das die unwirtliche Landschaft in ihrer Irrealität auszulösen vermag, wird jenem gegenübergestellt, das durch die menschliche Nutzung entsteht.

Die bildnerischen Anknüpfungspunkte an die Malerei des 18. und 19. Jahrhunderts und an das Genre des Science-Fiction in Literatur und Film sind bewusst gesetzt. So bezieht sich der Titel der Serie auf den neuseeländischen Science-Fiction Film Quiet Earth – das letzte Experiment von Geoff Murphy aus dem Jahr 1985.

 

The series deals with the Artic landscape - in terms of its development and ongoing climatic change - using the vehicle of the Spitsbergen archipelago. It covers aspects of the historic settlement of the archipelago, as well as mining and research there. The Construction of the quiet Earth also addresses the various different themes that are culturally and historically associated with the Arctic landscape: particularly the unease the inhospitable landscape can trigger, and the contrast between its inherent unreality and the reality caused by human presence.

The pictorial references to 18th and 19th century painting style are all deliberate, as is the genre of science fiction in literature and film shown in them.The title of the series refers to the 1985 New Zealand science fiction film Quiet Earth – the last experiment by Geoff Murphy.
