La Marea

La Marea (Gezeiten) handelt vom wiederkehrenden Kreislauf von Ebbe und Flut. Die Serie zeigt urbane Orte in Havanna und der Provinz Guantánamo auf der Insel Kuba. Jenseits romantisierender Betrachtung spielt der Titel der Serie anhand spezifischer Locations und ihrer Topologien auf die Realität einer im Umbruch befindlichen Gesellschaft im Kraftfeld ökonomischer und politischer Strömungen an.
Spiegelungen, Durchbrüche und Barrikaden stehen im Zentrum der Serie, deren in Fotografie gefasste Architekturen unterschiedlich stark von der Zeit und dem tropischen Klima geprägt sind. In der Bildkomposition und Licht/Schattensetzung der Arbeiten knüpft Nathalie Grenzhaeuser Bezüge zur Malerei der amerikanischen Moderne, wie beispielsweise der Edward Hoppers, und öffnet einen atmosphärischen Raum, der über den reinen Kubabezug hinausweist.

La Marea (Tides) is about the repetitive cycle of ebb and flow. The series shows urban locations in Havana and the province of Guantánamo on the island of Cuba. It reaches beyond romantic observation as the title of the series actually uses specific locations and their topologies to allude to a reality of a society in transition, caught in a forcefield of economic and political currents.
Barricades, breakthroughs and reflections and are at the center of the series; the architecture, captured therein via photographic imagery, is influenced to varying degrees by time and the tropical climate. In the composition of the images and the lighting/shading of the works, Nathalie Grenzhaeuser makes reference to American modernist painting, represents by artists such as Edward Hopper. The work, therefore, opens up an atmospheric space that goes beyond the pure and immediate reference to Cuba.

La Isla befasst sich mit den unterschiedlich ideologisch geprägten architektonischen Hinterlassenschaften der zu Kuba gehörenden Isla de la Juventud. Vor der kubanischen Revolution vor allem als Gefängnisinsel (Gefängnis Presidio Modelo) bekannt, erlangte die Insel in den 1970er Jahren infolge der zahlreichen sozialistischen Internate, die auf der Insel gebaut wurden, als ‚Insel der Jugend‘ eine neue Bedeutung. Tausende junger KubanerInnen sowie die sozialistische Jugend befreundeter Drittländer absolvierten dort ihr Studium in Verbindung mit landwirtschaftlicher Arbeit auf den umliegenden Großplantagen. La Isla setzt sich aus heutiger Perspektive mit den Internatsruinen und der einstigen Gefängnisanlage auseinander und zeigt den Alltag an diesen einst ideologisch bedeutenden Orten, die zunehmend von der Natur zurückerobert werden.

La Isla examines the architectural legacies - and their various ideological influences - of the Isla de la Juventud, which belongs to Cuba. The island primarily served as a prison island (Presidio Modelo) before the Cuban revolution. In the 1970s, Isla de la Juventud took on a new purpose as the 'Island of Youth', due to the numerous socialist boarding schools that were built on it. Thousands of young Cubans and young socialists from ideologically-friendly countries completed their studies there; combining them with agricultural work on the surrounding large plantations. La Isla examines the ruins of the boarding school and the former prison complex from a present day perspective and shows everyday life at these once ideologically important locations that are increasingly being reclaimed by nature.

Carnaval Caimanera

Caimanera ist eine kubanische Kleinstadt im Südosten der Insel. Sie ist Teil der kubanischen Militärzone und durch ihre unmittelbare Nähe zum US-Militärstützpunkts von Guantánamo Bay nur begrenzt zugänglich. Das Video erkundet die Stadt während , einem ausgelassenen Volksfest mit Tanz, Kirmes und Bier vor dem Hintergrund ihrer Gegenwärtigkeit als Sperrgebiet.

Caimanera is a small Cuban town in the southeast of the island. It is part of the Cuban military zone and has limited access due to its close proximity to the US military base at Guantánamo Bay. The video explores the town - against the backdrop of its current status as a restricted area - during the annual three-day carnival; a boisterous festival with dancing, funfairs and beer.
