La Grande Arche

La Grande Arche (Die Große Arche) ist Titel der Serie und zugleich der Name eines zentralen Bauwerks im Pariser Stadtteil La Défense. Die Arche, ein gigantischer, moderner Triumphbogen, in direkter Achse zum Arc de Triomphe der Pariser Innenstadt erbaut, wurde 1989 zum Gedenken der Ideale der Französischen Revolution eingeweiht. In Grenzhaeusers künstlerischer Adaption des Gebäudes wird La Grande Arche mit der biblischen Arche Noah assoziiert und in einen gemeinsamen Kontext mit der umgebenden Architektur, wie den zu ihren Füßen liegenden Steg La Jetée und die 1977 entstandene Wohnsiedlung Tours Nuages (Wolkentürme) von Émille Aillaud und Fabrizio Rieti gestellt. Vor dem Hintergrund der eigentümlichen Namensgebung der Gebäude, ihrer Gestaltung und städtebaulichen Entwicklung enstand ein eigenes bildnerisches Narrativ. Realität und Fiktion, Gegenwart und Geschichte vermengen sich mit frei assoziierbaren Gedankenarchitekturen. Zwischen Prestigebau und sozialem Brennpunkt, zwischen militärisch anmutender Camouflageoptik und Nationalethos, ‚Schlangenmonument‘ und öffentlicher Gartenarchitektur evozieren die Bilder die Kulisse eines zeitgenössischen, apokalyptischen Paradiesgartens.

La Grande Arche (The Great Ark) is the title of the series and shares its name with a building in the central Paris district of La Défense. That actual structure, a gigantic, modern triumphal arch was built in direct alignment with the Arc de Triomphe, and was inaugurated in 1989 to commemorate the ideals of the French Revolution. In La Grande Arche, Grenzhaeuser's artistic adaptation of the building draws parallels with Noah's Ark from the Bible, and is placed in a common context with the architecture that surrounds it, such as the La Jetée footbridge and the Tours Nuages ​​(Cloud Towers) housing development by Émille Aillaud and Fabrizio Rieti, built in 1977. A unique visual narrative, thereby, emerges in the context of this peculiar naming of structures - one that is connected to urban development, the buildings and their design. Reality and fiction, present and past are intertwined with associated intellectual architectural creations. La Grande Arche’s images - incorporating prestige buildings and social hot spots, military-looking camouflage optics and national ethos, the Louvre’s ‘Snake’ statue and public park architecture - evoke the backdrop of a contemporary, apocalyptic paradise garden.
